How Do Veterans Wind Up Unemployed?

Here is a scenario for you, a possibility based on knowledge, experience and several relationships with fellow members of the military community who have departed in search of greener pastures. In most cases about a year out from EAS (end of service date) that signifies you are about to complete your contractual obligation to the military, you will be flagged for an interview with your career planner and begin the process of deciding whether you are getting out, re-enlisting or going into the reserves.

It is about this time that you might also begin learning about TAPS and TAMPS (Transition Assistance Program and Transition Assistance Management Program) which is currently a week-long and involves a multitude of resources designed to prepare you for your transition from the military. There has been quite a buzz lately about the overhaul of the TAPS program and its design going to a "choose your own adventure" format with options being:

1. Going to college
2. Starting a business or
3. Getting technical training or a certification for entry into the work force.

In the mean time you will still see the familiar never-ending power point presentation that will inundate you with everything you need to successfully get out of the military and become a productive member of the 1st CivDiv as we call it. Here is where most of the problem lies... Timing... what you need to do align with when you care to know it. So many individuals hit the cruise control button as they sit through a week of TAPS classes and probably catch only the wave tops as they continue to go over their "fool-proof" plan for what they are going to do when they get out.

Now it doesn't help and it seems that no one misses this advice, that Vets are encouraged to go on unemployment for the first 4-6 months after getting out as a period of time to buffer them as they make the transition and ease back into civilian life. This would seem like a good idea right? Why wouldn't you want to give a combat Vet a few months breather after probably several tours to Iraq or Afghanistan?

Here is where we see the start of the Veteran unemployment "spiral", this Veteran excited as anything to be getting out, growing a beard and putting their hands in their pockets whenever they want, says hey I'll get out go on unemployment, go to college and then be set. Other variations of this half-cooked plan involve working for a family member, finding a job back in their home town or some combination of this. Now it may even come across like a solid plan to this Veteran's chain of command who is probably doing their part to counsel and advise this individual on his options and best course of action post military life (despite not having gone through it before... ).

So this Veteran is sitting in his transition classes a year or less out from leaving the military and guess what... he doesn't even know what he should or shouldn't be remembering, because well he isn't actually in the process of getting out now... heck even if he was a month from getting out he isn't back in where-eversville, USA collecting unemployment and doing probably only 10% of what he or she planned to do because well laziness begets laziness. No more 0600 formations, no more UA? Sure I'll sleep in a little, I mean I deserve it; this is my rest time, my recovery from all the years of long days and short nights. All this is fine until now this Veteran realizes that unemployment is running out soon or the college classes that were supposed to be a breeze are actually really not so much fun or as easy as planned and the plan when encountering the first bullet or obstacle goes to hell (as all leaders in the military are taught in regard to planning).

Now the Veteran is scrambling to adjust fire and create the results that this plan was supposed to produce easily on paper, well here lies the second problem, all the resources and chain of command advice are not nearly as easily accessible or remembered (caught only the wave tops during the power point). As we are all told in boot camp, "you will not rise to the challenges of your situation you will fall to the level of your training" thus the Veteran falls back into doing only what they know how to, whether it was a high school level summer job that they had before they left for the military or any number of bad habits they may have developed to cope with stress that they can't handle and voila you have yourself an unemployed Vet living at home, an underemployed Vet living below his potential or worse and its sad to say but a homeless Veteran shacking up beneath an underpass.

So what can be done? Can we communicate the message differently to get Vets attention at the time when it is the most critical? Can we get an excited soon to be former military member to want to make the right or even the better decisions in the face of a mountain of logistical and mental strains that any EAS provides? I happen to believe we can and I think it will be a collaborative effort that the military, VA, and post military training programs will provide. I think that Veterans need a "reverse boot camp" both while they are in (new TAPS program might improve this) and within the first 90-180 days of exiting the military. Veterans need the information easily accessible when they realize, as most college sophomores do, that they're major or direction in life has drastically changed and they didn't have a plan or know how to make a plan on their own that will get them there.

Comparing TQM and Six Sigma Manufacturing Methods

Total Quality Management
Total Quality Management, or TQM, was introduced in the middle of the twentieth century by a handful of American manufacturing consultants. After World War II, American manufacturing companies were booming, and took little notice of the principles laid out in TQM. Japanese companies, who were devastated by the effects of the war, took to the new concepts to rebuild their manufacturing capacity.

The basic concepts of this philosophy include such ideas as continuous improvement, total involvement from top to bottom of an organization, and ideals such as truth, integrity, and team building. Customer satisfaction becomes the main goal, and everyone in the organization is required to focus on how their role, however large or small, affects the customer.

These manufacturing methods lead to other concepts, such as just-in-time delivery, Kaizen method, and total-quality-loss systems. It wasn't until after the 1980's that the United States realized the extent that Japanese manufacturing was overtaking domestic manufacturing in terms of quality and customer satisfaction. There was a sudden willingness to learn and implement some of these methods in manufacturing in the United States.

The Lean Process

The first buzzword to come out of the new movement in manufacturing was "lean". Everyone was attempting to optimize by cutting out waste. The first lean process wasn't as structured as the modern practice. Simply reducing or cutting out waste was part of the solution, but it proved not to be the whole solution.

Today's lean methods include an organization-wide look at creating modules or "cells" that are a manageable size and are "movable" or able to be relocated within an organization. Process flow from one cell to another is another key so that transportation is minimized and inventories are minimized.

Six Sigma

The main difference to the previous process is that Six Sigma requires certification, and a required amount of experience. There is no standard for the type of training, although there is an agreement that a "black belt" requires the successful completion of two projects using the methods of manufacturing practices. Colleges and universities offer six sigma training, although the required experience has to be done in an industrial setting, either as employee or as an intern in manufacturing.

Six Sigma methods are generally used in design and implementation in the manufacturing departments. Lean methods can be applied in every part of the organization, including management, business, finance, purchasing, and other sectors not directly involved on the process line.

Manufacturing in the United States has evolved greatly in the past thirty years with the introduction of quality methods, equaling any other country in output quality and customer satisfaction.

Electrical License Requirements - North Dakota Electrician Licensing Prerequisites

To be licensed as a journeyman electrician in the state, you will have to satisfy a number of North Dakota electrician permit prerequisites:

30 Seconds to Shine

I don't know about you, but I network ALL the time. When I went full time with my business back in 2008, I attended at least one networking event each day. All of that meeting people required having some great 30-second commercials at the ready.

Unfortunately, not everyone puts as much effort into networking.

When I was at an event the other day, I was the only person in the room with a cohesive commercial, complete with a tagline; I received a round of applause when I sat back down.

Some of the worst presenters of their value are job seekers. So often, they stand up with no idea how to share a 30-second presentation, which means they lose that valuable time! It's just part of the conversation that I have with job seekers to talk about what they should share at a networking event. I am adamant that a resume by itself will likely NOT land them a job; they need to incorporate networking and social media to be more effective.

When thinking about a 30-second commercial, remember that you really only have 5-7 seconds to gain your audience's attention. If they hear nothing of value in that time, they tend to tune out. Obviously, that's not a lot of time, so starting with your name and/or company name may not be the best lead-in. For a writer, an example might be:

"Words are powerful. In the wrong hands, they can be ineffective and sometimes even dangerous! But in my hands, they can help you transform make more money."

Now you have them wondering what you do. This is the time to tell the rest of the story:

"I'm Sue Smith with I Write for You, and I create your business communications as your go-to writer."

A great commercial has a tagline or branding statement. This writer might finish with:

"Copy right and you'll never go wrong."

A job seeker can use the same formula to create interest. Truly, you don't want to share everything in a 30-second spot; you want to encourage listeners to come up to you and ask more! And the more specific you can be, the better. Often in a micro-presentation, it's appropriate to ask for a specific type of referral. I always encourage job seekers to be specific; if they aren't, no one will know how to help them. One example of a job seeker's 30-second commercial could be:

"I'm Joe Smith and I want to be your next sales director. Recently, at X Company, I transformed an underperforming region into delivering a 22%+ year-to-year return. I'm currently targeting an outside sales position in the beverage industry; Budweiser or Pepsi would be ideal."

Job seekers sometimes push back about mentioning specific companies, but the truth is that honing in like that can make listeners think about whom they know. Someone might walk up to the job seeker afterward and say, "I don't know anyone at Budweiser, but my sister is at Snapple. Would that be helpful?" Of course!

When delivering your commercial, be sure to stand. It draws attention and helps people to pay attention and remember you. Before you know it, people will be coming over to learn more!

The State Of Oregon's August 2012 Unemployment Rate Up To 8.9%

The unemployment rate in the State of Oregon went up once more in August 2012 to 8.9%. This rate rose 0.2% for the month, and is the now 4th straight month with an increase in Oregon. Additionally, the 8.9% rate is now the highest in the state for all of 2012 (0.1% over the January rate of 8.8%).

In August there were an about 175,700 workers unemployed in the state, a rise of about 3,000 compared to prior month of July. There was also a drop of about 9,000 people from the number of employed in Oregon during the month. This, partnered with a drop of around 6,000 in the total Oregon workforce brought about the 0.2% rise in the unemployment rate in August 2012. When compared to U.S. average, Oregon's unemployment rate is currently 0.8% higher that the national average of 8.1%. Moreover, while the U.S rate has been largley unchanged (or even gradually lower), the rate in Oregon has been on the rise of late.

Looking back on the past year the current 8.9% rate is still lower than the August 2011 unemployment rate of 9.5%. During the past year, the number of unemployed workers has gone down by approximately 14,000. Furthermore, the total number of employed people has increase by around 1,000. A big change, however, from a year ago is that there are roughtly 15,000 fewer workers in Oregon's overall workforce. These workers have likely either left the state or have quit actively looking for work.

Several neighboring states in the area have also seen their recent unemployment rates trend upwards. The State of Washington has had it's rate increase by 0.1% in August to 8.6%. Nevada, already with one of the highest rates in the nation, saw it's unemployment rates increase (0.1%) in August to 12.1%. The state of Wyoming also went up in August (by 0.1%) to 5.7%. However, several regional states did experience decreases in August 2012. Both the States of California (down 0.1% to 10.6%) and Idaho (down 0.1% to 7.4%) were down in for the month.

Although the unemployment rate was up in August, many of Oregon's major business sectors saw positive numbers during the month. Up in August were Construction, Manufacturing, Trade Transportation & Utilities, Information, Financial Activities, Professional & Business Services, Education & Health Service, and Leisure & Hospitality. The only business sector showing a decrease in August was Government. Mining and Logging was unchanged for the month. The industry with the biggest employment numbers in August was Trade Transportation & Utilities, followed by Government.
