Read The Terms And Conditions Of Your Employment Contract

Firstly, always make sure that you have carefully read and understand the full details of your contract. Ask for clarification if there are any doubts in your mind in relation to this. Make a simple list of your contractual duties for your easy reference. Be sure to regularly re-read your contract in order to ensure that you are continuing to fulfil your contractual obligations. Aim to over deliver by sometimes going beyond your call of duty while at the same time remaining within your professional guidelines.

Pre-planning

Try to foresee problems and plan ahead to prevent them becoming a reality. Your boss will really appreciate this and is likely to see you as a valued staff member and is likely to recommend you for promotion when ever the opportunity arises. Avoid asking for promotion or pay rises at a time when there may be redundancies as it is better to highlight your value rather than your cost to the company.

Be careful about making it known to your employers that you feel your duties are continually being modified as you may be regarded a none team player. If on the other hand your employers have identified you as one of those who are likely to be made redundant in the next wave of re-alignment, (a euphemism sometimes used to mask redundancies) then you should strategically put together a lengthy document pointing out that you have in fact been fulfilling a different role to the post which is now to be made redundant.

Make sure that you are aware of all other jobs within the organisation which match your skill-set. You should do this whether or not those posts are currently filled; keeping in mind that success is more likely when preparation meets with opportunity. Maintain a holistic view of the company making sure that you are aware of the other disciplines as your versatility will always stand you in good stead if you need to step into different role.

You should also maintain contact with colleagues on all levels throughout the organization where ever possible always focusing on how things might be improved. Keep a folder with all your suggestions to be used when the time is right. Be willing to fill a lesser role than your current post as this is much better than redunancy and you may well be promoted in the future.

How D0 Employment Laws Affect You

Safeguard yourself by being in full knowledge of employment laws generally and in particular those relating to your job. Be assured that your employers can not simply make you redundant because they want to give the job to someone else, or they want to move the post to a different department, nor are they allowed to make a few minor changes or re-write your contract while you are in post and then attempt to get rid of you by making you redundant.

Your Employers Have A Legal Obligation To Take Certain Steps To Ensure Your Protection

Your employers must undertake all reasonable steps to ensure that redundancy is a last resort. Early retirement is one such step which might be taken to avoid shedding staff. Even then, you should make sure that you are not being offered early retirement ahead of others who are older than you, unless of course this falls in line with your long term plans.

Of course you should remain flexible as this will make it easier for your employers to redeploy you if this becomes necessary. Give your employers all the assistance you can by suggesting that all casual, freelance and self employed staff should be the first whose services should be dispensed with. Apply this to anyone else that you know of who is not in possession of a permanent contract. You could make suggestions as to which of the possible redundancies could fulfil those posts while highlighting the most apt skills of yours truly.

If your organisation is one which both requires and allows paid overtime, you could suggest that this requirement is met by retaining possible redundant staff and working within the company's normal working hours as this will go some distance to balancing the books and saving money.

Your Employer Must Make You A Firm Offer

Where there are other available jobs within the organisation, your employers must make you a firm offer in writing. You should not have to apply for any job within the organisation which suit your skill-set and that you can fulfil with little or no further training. Make sure you receive an unconditional offer in writing before the end of your current contract.

The new job must legally be different or have some significantly different elements to your current post. Your employer can not make you redundant simply to re-employ you at a lower salary. Your new job must begin immediately at the end of your present job or within four weeks of the conclusion of it. You are legally allowed a four week trial period in your new post and are still entitled to a 'Statutory Redundancy Payment' (SRP) should your new job prove to be unsuitable. You should be aware though, that you could at this stage loose your (SRP) if your reasons for rejecting the post are deemed unreasonable.

Give Your Employer As Mush Help As You Can

Business owners, managers and those in the higher echelons of the organisation are not necessarily the most well equipped to recognise where improvements can be made. With this in mind you could make helpful suggestions about how productivity can be improved. Do an appraisal of the organisation to see what little suggestions you can make to effect significant improvements. You should always test the political climate of your organisation before sticking your neck out as you can easily put noses out of joint by being too clever.

Up-date Your CV

Know your worth, keep your CV up to date always remembering to add new experiences and achievements both from your current post and all previous post to your CV. Include as much relevant life experience as you can and have pre-arranged referees to help you secure your new job if this becomes necessary.

The State Of Arizona's August 2012 Unemployment Rate Unchanged (8.3%)

Arizona's employment statistics have been released for August 2012. The State's August unemployment rate remained unchanged at 8.3%. There were about 250,000 unemployed people in Arizona in for the month. This is an increase of roughly 900 individuals over July. The number of employed in the State also fell in August by around 3,300 individuals to approximately 2.75 million. However, this number was mostly offset by a subsequent drop of 2,400 in the total civilian workforce. Taken collectively, these statistics result in the unchanged unemployment rate for AZ in August 2012.

If we contrast to a year ago in August 2011, we see that the current 8.3% rate is still significantly better than the year-ago rate of 9.5%. The result of the large drop in the rate was around 37,500 less unemployed individuals in Arizona in August 2012 vs. August 2011. Moreover, during that time frame there were around 19,000 more employed individuals in the state. Additionally, while the recent pattern for many states has been up in recent months, Arizona's unemployment rate has mainly dropped for 2012. Compared to the national average Arizona's August 8.3% rate is just slightly (0.2%) higher than the U.S. average.

The industry employment numbers for Arizona in August are generally negative. Down for the month were Mining & Logging, Construction, Manufacturing, Education & Health Services, Leisure & Hospitality, and Government. A handful of industries, however, did see employment gains. These included Trade Transportation & Utilities, Financial Activities, and Professional & Business Services. The business type with the largest percentage gain in the state over the past year was Construction (up 6.7%). The industry with the biggest drop in employment during that timeframe was Other Services (down 1.8%). The major business sector with the most employed continues to be Trade Transportation and Utilities with approximately 485,400.

When compared to other States in the area, Arizona's August 2012 unemployment rate is about average. Higher than Arizona in August 2012 are the States of California (10.6%) and Nevada (12.1% - still one of the highest in the nation). State's with lower unemployment rates include Colorado (8.2%), New Mexico (6.5%), Utah (5.8%), and Wyoming (5.7%).

Apprenticeships Are Real Eduction in South Africa

Apprenticeships are real education accessible to all

Formal education, or rather the complete lack of it, will become the current South African government's greatest legacy. It will be nothing to be proud of and is a tragedy of the greatest proportions. I am a firm proponent that apprenticeships are real education and that vocational training is a realistic part of the solution for millions of unemployed youth in Africa.

Unfortunately, as I ponder this article, it occurs to me that it would be dangerously easy to move into a diatribe against the educational crisis in South Africa and place newspapers filled with the odorous mixture of doggy-doo and responsibility at the relevant doors. But I will tread cautiously.

A few weeks ago, I was approached by two young, businessmen looking for partners in a bold venture. They were looking for access to the business world and guidance in how to approach this foreign creature.

My immediate reaction was astonishment at the bravery of these two chaps and, after spending some time with them, this was quickly followed by two further reactions. Firstly, the unlimited vision that these enthusiastic entrepreneurs had, was quite breath-taking and perhaps a lesson lies is this fact alone. After years in business, some of my bolder visions have been jaded by many voices telling me to "be realistic" - but this is food for another article entirely. Suffice it to say that their business plan is bold beyond the wildest I have ever encountered. And secondly, I was saddened by the absolute naiveté with which they approached business.

It reminded me of my initial encounters with business as a specialised profession, as opposed to my formal training as an attorney. There is no doubt that the business degree, achieved after my first three years at university, was just as much preparation as the following three years would be for the postgraduate degree in law. I would venture that my personal education took place only after university and once I had entered the "real" world to serve out two years Articles of Clerkship, which was a prerequisite to fully qualifying and being admitted to practise as a lawyer. The intention of these Articles of Clerkship is to provide on-the-job, vocational training in an internship of sorts.

And now, back to the two optimistic guys from earlier. Their curriculum vitae indicated no tertiary education, but I do not believe this to be a limitation. In any event, readers familiar with South Africa's secondary and tertiary educational system will be aware that pass rates in learning institutions are announced to be equalled or improved upon yearly by beaming idiots, to some degree because of the relentless lowering of standards. That lowering of standards renders formal education tragically over-rated locally until approximately a Masters tertiary level, or at the very least, a post-graduate Honours level - astonishing! Once-proud and internationally recognised educational institutions can no longer offer any prestige.

The significance of this lies in the opportunity to encourage alternative approaches to skilling up potential employees or entrepreneurs.

How to get into the business world?

In many "developed" nations, alternate paths of education such as apprenticeship have been the norm for decades and, at around the tenth school year (grade 10 or standard 8), pupils elect to follow either the more academic route or the vocational training approach. The benefits and drawbacks of each have also been the cause of debate for decades, but the simple fact of extremely low unemployment rates in countries where vocational training is an option, relative to those in South Africa, speak volumes as to the benefits of both. In my interactions with "products" of both paths, it often seems that the most important issue at play in broad terms is the preferred method of learning for each individual's strengths. By this I mean that certain individuals excel in academic environments, while others thrive on more practical methodology. The beauty of the alternate educational pathways seems to lie in the opportunity, for those who are not academically inclined or who do not come from an academically strong or conducive background, to further their education and skills.

A unique challenge faces South Africans from under-privileged (read: poor) backgrounds. It is often not appreciated that a poor European or Japanese or Canadian will generally still have access to electricity and be able to study their school work at night in an electrically lit room; whereas a poor South African will have to walk 15 kilometres home from school, perform household chores, and try to study by candlelight in a noisy, informal living settlement (read: squatter camp), sharing one room between eight people, on an empty stomach because the only meal they have each day is at school.

And thus, it seems that the historical background of the country has resulted in enormous value being placed on completed academic secondary and tertiary education. This, unfortunately, raises the daunting prospect that great weight is placed on achieving something that is beyond the reach of most young South Africans. It is beyond their reach, not for lack of ability or desire, but due to apathy. Political will and direction is lacking to an extent that no amount of historical finger-pointing and avoidance of accountability can gloss over. Alleged solutions are found in conceiving high tech learning materials like touch-screen tablets loaded with internet capability and study guides. This is utter nonsense in the African environment and economically not viable. My laptop at work collapses every so often for no identifiable reason - I cannot imagine how sensitive IT equipment is meant to survive a dusty, rustic, rural school, to say nothing of the vulnerability to crime.

For reasons falling beyond the scope of this article, academics qualifications are the ideal of many South Africans. Trade qualifications and apprenticeships are very much the ugly sister at the school dance.

Two young men with a huge dream asked for help and they did not have the relevant academic paperwork upon which so much stead is placed in South Africa. Yet, their story does not deserve to end there. Limitations experienced by young people in their secondary education should not be limitations in their life. There should be nothing to stop a willing learner from furthering herself or himself. The route of apprenticeships is not limited to sterling academic records and can be made available on a far broader scale. Quite apart from the ability of a potential investor to put financial backing into a project, there is often the potential to inject mentorship and knowledge.

Apprenticeships offer learning experience beyond the academic, and provide the platform to teach skills not generally taught in formal academic environments. Those skills include time-keeping, inter-personal interactions in a work environment, corporate structure, accountability, business ethics and reporting. There is a school of thought that suggests any person needs 10 000 hours before becoming an expert in a certain trade or skill. Those hours are not productively achieved sitting in classes, but rather in applying knowledge learned.

South Africa is a country replete with corporate social debt and the relative immaturity of its political role players often results in misguided economic policy, particularly where the entrepreneur is concerned. However, a positive spinoff of this is the driving of corporate social responsibility programs. As with many such policies, the idea is excellent but its implementation under legislative pressure is misguided. Billions of rands (hundreds of millions of pounds or dollars) are spent by corporates on multiple programs which, on the face of it, are there to benefit poor communities and the geographical regions in which those corporates have made their wealth. Truthfully, many of those programs are meaningless.

Corporate social responsibility

No doubt, managers and executives to whom this responsibility is given within those corporates will slam down their cups of coffee furiously at the preceding sentence, but after mopping up the coffee, they should rather admit it. They should take a good, creative look at their CSR (corporate social responsibility) role and assess how those billions could be more sustainably spent. I am not for one moment suggesting that charities are not worthy causes - but the underlying sustainability of the work done by that charity is critical. Many readers will know the principle that if you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day; but if you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.

The eager entrepreneurs expressed their frustration to me when I questioned why they would possibly approach me of all people. These two, young men were willing to learn, full of ideas and enthusiasm, but dramatically constricted in the reality of their access to knowledge and experience. Regardless of their eagerness to become businesspeople and their open acceptance of formal educational limits, their real problem lay simply in the fact that they had no other options. Aspirant businesspeople often wonder where to turn and how to make their way into a boardroom, any boardroom, just for the chance to be heard. And in this, lay their answer about why they approached me... I was one of very few willing to listen.

Here is my challenge to the managers of corporate social responsibility programs and expenditure across South Africa: spending money is easy - foster a program in terms of which your staff and executives spend time! Spend time on young dreams and offer programs for apprenticeships.

Vocational training might be seen as less glamorous than a university degree, but it has been, and continues to be, a most effective manner of training and development across the world. If South Africa makes an honest and open assessment of the quandary its many ill-educated and unemployed youth find themselves in, it should take glory and glamour out of the social disposition.

The goal of young South Africans should be self-improvement and achieving/creating employment. One of the most useful and tangible ways to achieve this is with education through apprenticeships.

I read a statistic a few years ago that applied to some high percentage of people (the number is long since forgotten, but it was a major slice of the populace) who have the jobs they have, not because they sought after the type of job they thought they would enjoy or be good at.

No, the reason why most of us have the jobs we have today is because the job was available or offered to us at the time were looking for work. And, most people are not thrilled with where they ended up. (Maybe that's why they call it Work.)

When you are between jobs you can try to sway the odds of ending up somewhere you might like a little better.

If you haven't given any serious thought to it, this is a good place to start.

Make a list of the types of jobs you would like to have. Keep in mind your skills too, so that you can get matched up with a job. I'm going to start this post by providing a real life case scenario of a friend of mine who has been working two jobs for the past four years. The tips for getting and keeping up with a second job will actually be conclusions withdrawn from this example. Let's call this friend of mine James.

The Example

James' first job was in real estate, to be more specific, he was (and still is) a field agent for a real estate company in a big city. Evidently, this job requires him to drive around the town and show his clients various properties, negotiating prices, persuading them to purchase, closing deals and taking care of specific paperwork. Now, since he has always been gifted with the pencil and also has a degree in graphic design, he took his second job at a Manga magazine, as a character graphic designer.

His first job, as a real estate agent, is a full-time job, 5 days a week, 9 hours a day, with a one hour lunch time break. For his second job, as a graphic designer, he works 6 hours per working day, and 8 hours on each Saturday. Therefore, he is still free on Sundays, to spend quality time with his family.

When I asked him how can he keep up with both two jobs, he replied that he considers his second job as a break from the first job. That the work as a designer relaxes him by a lot and he couldn't be happier with another job than that.

Obviously, he made a wise decision when he took the second job.

Now, based on this example, here are a few tips regarding the choosing and keeping up with a second job.

The Tips

1. Consider the risks, downsides and benefits of a second job. Obviously the main risk regarding this matter are extreme fatigue, and the primary downside is the lack of time for other activities. The main benefit is the extra cash. So, before even selecting a second job, you should ask yourself a couple of questions. For example:

- Will I have enough time to spend with my family?
- Will I have enough time to sleep?
- What level of stress will I be exposed to?
- How will this affect my health?
- Is the extra money worth the effort and the risk?

2. Consider a second job that is opposite from your main job. To put it differently, if your first job requires you to do office or sedentary work, your second job should require physical work, or activities where you can at least benefit from some fresh air. It's a good idea to search for a job with flexible hours, a job that's less psychically stressing. Jobs that usually fit to this profile can be found in food and hospitality industries.

3. Calculate the extra amount of money that you would need and figure out how many extra working hours will be necessary. You may not even need to work full-time for your second job, to gain the extra money that you need.

4. During the interview for your second job, avoid mentioning that you already have a job, unless the interviewer specifically asks you this. Not many would want to hire someone who has all the chances to work only at half capacity. And if you do mention that you already have a job, your skills and experience for the second job would better be outstanding.

5. Plan everything, especially your sleeping hours. Since free time or sleeping time is going to become very precious, planning each and every mundane activity, even meals, is of the essence. Having a full schedule for every week is a good idea. And whatever you do, make sure you sleep at least 5 hours a night.

The Grasshopper and the Ant

My father used to always tell me a story about a grasshopper and an ant to drive home the importance of proper preparation preventing... well poor performance. The story was simple and contained only the two fore-mentioned characters. All summer long the ant slaved away in the hot sun to store away food and materials that he would need later that fall once the winter arrived and resources became scarce. Watching him work was the grasshopper that lived in the moment, simply content to lay back and let the sun wash over him as food was plentiful and life was good.

The ant throws out a caution to the grasshopper stating that he will be hurting for food once the winter comes and that he had better store some away now if he is to survive. Well as the story clearly unfolds the winter comes and the ant though not especially happy about the cold weather and bleak conditions has enough food and proper shelter to somewhat comfortably make-due. The contrast is of course the grasshopper who is sitting outside in the snow freezing, starving and eventually begging the ant for food due to his poor planning.

This story is simple yet it rings true for many, how many times do we wish we had thought something through a little better or took an extra moment to plan the minor details before arriving at the moment of truth. Anyone who has been camping and encountered a summer thunderstorm without the adequate equipment surely knows what I am talking about. If planning is so important, when then should a member of the active duty services begin planning for his or her departure from those services and subsequent transition back into the civilian world?

This may seem like an easy question, much the same way the story seemed like it was obvious enough, but is this question as straight forward as it may seem? Is the answer simply, as early as possible? Or is that too naïve a response given that many service members do not even know for sure what conditions and factors will be present that may either push them toward getting out or encourage them to remain in the military?

It has been my experience thus far those two years out is simply too far away for any level of planning beyond taking college prerequisites for credits which a service member would probably do regardless of whether they are getting out or staying in. Even a year out from an individual's End of Active Service seems like a large enough gaps to leave many Veterans wondering how they could 1. Pause work long enough to think about what to do next and 2. Know for sure whether they want to get out or remain in. For enlisted military often times the tipping point for a decision comes in the form of re-enlistment deadlines and closed out occupational specialties before they come from personal preference and well thought out planning.

Are we approaching one of the biggest transitions an individual can make with the mindset of the grasshopper who sits back and sees decisions as too much work until it's too late and then scrambling to throw a few ideas together prior to getting handed the DD214 and finding ourselves on the other side of the looking glass. How many members of our military have thought their "plan" was just as robust and in alignment with their happiness as the grasshopper did sitting in the sun and soaking up the "good times"? How many quickly found out as the winter months set in and the accessibility to resources became far scarcer that when tested their plan was little more than a few leaves in the cold winter breeze?

There is and can be a better way to approach this monumental transitional phase of a Veterans life, but it will require an equally impressive effort from both the services that the person is departing as well as the civilian sector that he or she is entering to properly guide, prepare and train him or her for the winter months ahead. They will need to know where to look for food now that the automatic payments on the 1st and the 15th have dried up and how to illicit the help of others like them to create powerful leverage and results from their experiences and skill sets gained in the military.

Electrical License Requirements - Oregon Electrician Licensing Prerequisites

For you to get your journeyman electrician certification in Oregon, you're going to be required to fulfill these Oregon electrician permit criteria:

1. Have no less than 4 years of working experience as an electrical apprentice or equivalent
2. Submit an Application for an Electrical License to the Oregon Building codes Division (BCD)
3. Take and ace the Oregon electrical accreditation examination

If you didn't complete an endorsed apprenticeship training program in Oregon, you may fulfill the practical experience condition by presenting educational records confirming that you've accomplished 576 hours of school training and 8,000 hrs of on-the-job experience outside of Oregon. You have to also present a breakdown of the hours of commercial, industrial and residential work that you've completed, with a minimum of 1,000 hrs needed in each classification.

Taking The Oregon Electrician Accreditation Assessment

To sit for the OR electrician certification test, you're going to have to submit an application to the Oregon BCD. The application payment for a journeyman license is a hundred and ten dollars and has to be included in your application, otherwise it will be denied. The admin cost is non-refundable.

For you to confirm your on-the-job experience, you will need to send in an Electrical Experience Verification letter from all of your previous employers. If the boss is not available, you may request for either a manager or a co-worker that was actually involved to validate your on-the-job experience. The form should be completed with the details of the specific categories of work you've completed and the amount of hours you've racked up doing each class of work.

Once the application has been approved, you are going to be given a Letter of Authorization describing specific guidelines for sitting for the examination and the exam location information. You will need to book your examination with the examination office inside of sixty days of getting the document, otherwise you will have to send in another application form along with a further cost to book a different time.

The OR electrician licensing test is open book and is centered around the 2011 National Electrical Code (NEC). The assessment contains 52 multiple-choice questions and is 3 hrs in duration. The Building Codes Division will usually review your exam and send you the score inside of 14 days. In case you don't pass your assessment initially, you can send in an application for another test after a waiting period of one month.

Once you've received your certificate, you're going to be required to renew it every three yrs for a payment of 100 dollars. Additionally, you will need to complete a minimum of twenty four hrs of accredited ongoing electrical training, 8 hrs of which must cover the newest edition of the National Electrical Code.

Facing Today's Transportation Issues With Something Other Than a Band-Aid

Band Aids are the name of a brand of adhesive bandage. They sometimes can help a wound heal a little easier than leaving an open cut for bacteria/germs to enter our blood stream. They hold broken skin together. They can cover up something that needs to be kept from public view. It is not, however, something that actually repairs what is broken. We seem to have gotten way too comfortable using them to fix what is broken and have lost the real definition of a band-aid.

I sat in a meeting today on transportation - specifically dealing with traffic congestion on a major freeway. As I listened to the description of "the plan" and how spending billions - with a "b" - on widening this freeway was the only way to fix the problem, my stomach started to get knots in it. The more I listened - the more it felt like I was hearing a band-aid solution - which isn't a solution at all - but a cover-up for a broken transportation system.

When are we going to reach a place in this country - on this planet - when covering up what is really broken no longer works for us? The freeway discussion today was a perfect reflection of where we are on so many of the complex problems.

How can we justify spending billions of dollars that this region and nation doesn't have to widen highways that - upon completion (usually ten plus years) - will be just as congested as they were? How wide do our freeways have to get before we finally say - Hmm, maybe we should find another answer? Granted - we know how to build really BIG freeways and have done so from sea to shining sea, but have we "fixed" anything?

So, why are we "OK" with band aids? Is it because thinking about the problem is hard? Have we reached the place where we rather just cover up the problem instead of put the work and thinking that it takes to find a true solution?

All I know is that band aids can only work for so long. I believe that we have reached the place where the complex problems that this nation and planet are facing are going to require major shifts in our thinking. I am done using band aids as the answer.

Veterans can understand these band aids all too well as one looks at the past in terms of military transition and post war efforts to provide our service members a life after the battlefield. Only recently has the powers to be realized the importance of handling with care this invaluable resource, our Veteran community. Nowhere else can you find a group with such diverse skills, strong leadership and a will to continue on until the mission is accomplished?

Such incredible individuals know that band aids don't work and aren't afraid to roll up their sleeves, make hard decisions and get away from the status quo. These are the thinkers we need solving the problems of today and the future, help us launch them in a way that has them reaching the heights needed to solve complex global issues.
