10 Top Skills Graduates Lack - But Over 50s Have

I know a lot of you reading this article will think that you're 'over the hill' and will never get a decent job. But you are so wrong, as thankfully, employers are not always impressed with younger (perhaps even better educated) candidates.

So take heart, as a recent survey showed that graduates are lacking a WHOLE LOT OF SKILLS and guess what? You probably have them!

Let's imagine for a moment that I have a crystal ball I can look into and tell you what your would-be employer is looking for...  wouldn't it be great? Well, the good news is (I don't actually have a crystal ball) but what I DO have is some research which shows younger candidates lack the skills that mature candidates, just like you, have in abundance!

Take a look at this list of the 10 Top Skills Employers find lacking in graduates  according to the  Association of Graduate Recruiters "Skills for Graduates in the 21st Century"  and feel your heart lighten!

Commercial Awareness 67%

Communication Skills 64%

Leadership 33%

Ability to Work as Part of a Team 33%

Problem Solving 32%

Conceptual Ability 21%

Subject Knowledge & Competence 19%

Foreign Languages 19%

Numeracy (Maths) 19%

Good General Education 15%

Now the next thing I want you to do is congratulate yourself for all the skills you identified in the list that you actually have and can demonstrate this by providing examples for your future employers on your CV/Resumes and during the job interview.

Remember, younger and better educated job candidates are not always what employers want or need. They may NOT possess the skills and experience you have taken a working lifetime to perfect!
